To get started, how much should you plant? It is recommended to plant 1-2 4×4’ boxes per person depending on how much you eat. Add one more box if you want to preserve the harvest. Plant 1/3 less for children.

What can you plant? One purpose of Square Foot Gardening is to maximize space. In one 4×4’ box you can grow:
12 plants leaf lettuce, 16 radishes, 16 onions, 16 beets, 16 carrots, plus you can harvest 6 lbs. beans, tomatoes, chard, and cucumbers. Read the book for more details.

What Type of Soil Should You Use? The book’s author, Mel Bartholomew recommends 1/3 Peat Moss, 1/3 Coarse Vermiculite, & 1/3 Blended Organic Compost. Our Square Foot Garden Soil Kit is the easiest way to achieve this mix. See us for details. One note, Mel previously recommended 5 different types of compost. However, his web site now says to use a well blended compost. You’ll need 8 cuft. of soil for each 4×4’ box. Read the book for more details.
